Rosenthal Malibu Estate poured its last public tastings at its Newton Canyon vineyard on Saturday, Sept. 26, from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m., according to The Malibu Times. That leaves two vineyard options in the hills above town, and both now work through a booking page. Cielo Farms sells a pass by the party and sets its open days on a calendar. Saddlerock Ranch sends visitors to guided tours. Walk-in wine is still around, but it's down at Cross Creek, at the Trancas taproom for beer, and at a beer garden on Sherman Way in West Hills.
A month after the closing, here is how each remaining option works and what it takes to get a glass.
What Closed on Newton Canyon Road
The vineyard tastings only ran for about a year. Rosenthal lost its Pacific Coast Highway wine bar and patio in the January 2025 Palisades Fire. It then opened the vineyard itself to visitors, starting with an August 2025 soft opening of wine and live music under the estate's oak trees. The Malibu Times covered that reopening at the time. Two familiar pieces from the PCH site came back with it, a fragment of the Berlin Wall and the oversized chair that used to stand outside. Both had been saved after the fire.
The vineyard is where Rosenthal's wine began. George Rosenthal planted his first vines in 1987, which the winery calls Malibu's first vineyard. The estate's 28 acres of vines sit about 1,450 feet above sea level in Newton Canyon, inside the Malibu-Newton Canyon American Viticultural Area, on a property of roughly 250 acres.
The winery hasn't said publicly what happens next to the vines, the wine production or the wine club. Its online shop still lists wines. Anyone with bottles on order or a club membership should go to the Rosenthal website for updates. Only the public tastings have a confirmed end date.
Up on Mulholland, the Calendar Decides
About a mile of Mulholland Highway now holds most of what's left of hillside wine near Malibu. It also runs on rules that a casual drop-in visit doesn't fit.
Cielo Farms is at 31424 Mulholland Hwy. Its listing describes a Tuscan-inspired estate with more than 35 acres of grapevines and olive groves looking out over the Santa Monica Mountains. Glasses are poured at The Barn wine bar, and getting in has its own steps:
- Book a Cielo Farms Pass on Tock. It costs $35 per party, not per person, and covers groups of one to 10.
- Plan on advance reservations and a 21+ rule. Sundays can be family-friendly when available.
- Groups of 11 or more email [email protected] and don't book through the pass.
- Check the Cielo Farms events calendar for the exact date you want, because there aren't fixed weekly hours.
The calendar for the week before this post shows The Barn open 2 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 21 and Thursday, Oct. 22. Then it closed for the whole day on Friday, Oct. 23 and Saturday, Oct. 24. The closed Saturday wasn't an empty one. Cielo Farms hosted Malibu Rising that day, a 3 p.m. to 9 p.m. benefit for The Malibu Project's coastal restoration effort. It had sound baths and kirtan in the afternoon and live music from Isabella Viking, Sun and The Saint, Erika and Alex Orbison, and Cisco Adler, with DJ sets by Wyldeflower of KCRW. General admission was $100. On the Thursday before, Comedy & Magic Under the Stars ran from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. under heat lamps. At Cielo, a Saturday is just as likely to be a ticketed event as a regular wine-bar day.
Saddlerock Ranch is a short way down the road at 31727 Mulholland Highway. Its website points visitors to Malibu Wine Hikes. That site describes the ranch as an 1,100-acre vineyard and working ranch and sells guided wine hikes, 4x4 tours and VW wine-bus tours. Every one of those is a scheduled tour you book ahead. None of them is a bar you drop into.
The Walk-In Pours Sit Lower Down
Down the hill, the posted hours stay put, and some places take walk-ins.
Summer Somewhere Wines runs a tasting room at Malibu Village, 3822 Cross Creek Rd, with seating inside and out. Its visit page lists Wednesday by appointment, Thursday 1 p.m. to 6 p.m., Friday 1 p.m. to 7 p.m., Saturday noon to 7 p.m. and Sunday noon to 6 p.m. That makes it the wine tasting room closest to the Civic Center with set afternoon hours four days a week.
Malibu Brewing Company pours at Trancas, 30745 Pacific Coast Hwy, Suite R4. It opens daily at 11 a.m. and closes at 8 p.m. Sunday through Thursday and 8:30 p.m. on Friday and Saturday. Reservations are available, and the taproom's number is 310-684-2408. The brewery has also expanded to Agoura Hills, as The Malibu Times reported in August. The Agoura Hills taproom at 29281 Agoura Road is open 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. on weekdays and opens at 10 a.m. on weekends.
Malibu Wines & Beer Garden may be the easiest outdoor glass to get with the Malibu name on it, and it's in the Valley. The tasting room is at 23130 Sherman Way in West Hills and serves Saddlerock and Saddlerock Estate wines. Our Ventura Blvd described the West Hills garden as the Semler family's latest concept back in 2018. According to its visit page, reservations are recommended, walk-ins are welcome, and reserved tables take a $20-per-person deposit. Hours are noon to 7 p.m. Sunday through Thursday, last pour 6:30 p.m., and noon to 9 p.m. Friday and Saturday, last pour 8:30 p.m. The city requires valet Friday through Sunday. It costs $8, or $6 in cash, and showing a rideshare receipt at the bar takes $10 off the tab. There's a silent disco every Saturday evening, weather permitting, with no reservation needed.

Building a Saturday Around the New Map
Each place sets its own terms, so a weekend afternoon takes a bit of planning in advance.
- Check Cielo's calendar first. It's the only option in the hills with a wine bar, and it's also the only one that can be closed for the whole day you had in mind. If The Barn is open, book the pass for your whole group at once, since the $35 covers up to 10 people.
- Use Cross Creek as the fallback in town. Summer Somewhere's Saturday hours run noon to 7 p.m., which leaves room for lunch nearby first.
- Head to Trancas for a later or beer-centered day. Malibu Brewing stays open until 8:30 p.m. on Friday and Saturday and takes reservations. It's the easiest way to end an afternoon near Zuma or Point Dume.
- Allow for the drive and the valet if you go to West Hills. The Saturday silent disco and the 9 p.m. close make Sherman Way the latest option on this list. On weekends, the rideshare discount covers more than the cost of the valet.
Hours and calendars at all five change over time. Each venue's own page is the one to check before you go.
If you're new to Malibu or comparing it with other parts of Los Angeles, these weekend details matter as much as the floor plan. That's part of what Chris Ryder covers with clients at Paraclete Real Estate. If you'd like to talk through how a Malibu address would fit your weekends, Book an Appointment and we'll start there.
